Located in Central Michigan, Saginaw is home to the Lake State Railway. Once a town that was dominated by three Class I railroads, Saginaw is now an important hub for the state’s shortline railroad market. Between the Lake State Railway and Genesee & Wyoming’s Huron & Eastern Railroad, Saginaw Yard is a busy place. Throughout the week, the Lake State operates several daily trains that originate from Saginaw, interchanging with the Genesee & Wyoming and CSX Transportation in Flint.

2017 marks the 25th Anniversary for the thriving Lake State Railway. Founded in 1992, the company has been changing the way freight rail is moved throughout central Michigan. Though the company strives to modernize and operate efficiently, they also embrace and preserve some of their rich company heritage. This practice is evident in that the railroad still uses the former Pere Marquette roundhouse as a maintenance facility. Originally opened in 1921, the now ten-stall roundhouse is one of many historical buildings utilized by the Lake State in Saginaw Yard.
